Motrin gets in trouble

Motrin ran an ad that encouraged mothers that wear thier babies on their backs or bellies to take Motrin when their backs get sore.  This made many moms angry.  The reason was, that taking drugs for pain is not good for breast-fed babies.  These mad moms started blogging on twitter, encouraging a boycott of Motrin.  Word quickly spread, and Motrin was forced to pull the ad.  Social media played an incredible role in this chain of events.  First with the actual ad, then the negative response of the consumers. The availability of social media helped both the consumers and the makers of Motrin.  Mothers had the benefit of being educated about the risks of pain medications in thier breast milk, and the neccesity of adjusting how their child hangs on their body if they feel pain.  Motrin recieved the benefit of a quick response by consumers, thereby being able to meet their needs more effectively.

Is Obama’s administration “breaking new ground” by using social media?

In a way, I agree with Turoczy and anwer the above question with a “yeah”.  However, it is only a very basic yeah.  With the advent of new technologies and services, comes a growing use of the new advents.  Because Obama’s administration used and is using social media more than any political force in history, doesn’t necesarily mean that it is profoundly innovative.  It is within the realm of possibility, that Jimmy Carter’s administration would have utilized the world wide web and its media capabilities just as much as the Obama camp, had the technology been available.  The same argument can be applied to all technological advancements.  Just because a group or individual is proficient in a disipline, this hardly makes them true innovators.

Obama uses crowdsourcing

The President elect has a website dedicated to providing the public with information about his administration.  The site also beckons its visitors to communicate with the administration.  Asking the public for suggestions and stories is definetely crowdsourcing.  The Obama administration’s website is a continuation of the recent campaign.  During the campaign, it used myspace and twitter to reach out to voters.  Now it reaches out to contituents with yet another interactive media tool.
